1962 World's Fair - Let the Fair Begin
On April 21, 1962, President John F. Kennedy, Jr. pressed the key of a gold-nugget-encrusted telegraph key sending the message to Seattle and the world, "Let the Fair begin!"

A crowd of 51,510 people came that sunny day to the opening of the Seattle World's Fair. More than 10 million visitors came to the fair April 21 through October 21, a feat that amazed the fair organizers, participants and supporters.

First Quarter: Astronaut John Glenn is the first American to orbit the earth. He circles the earth three times in a Mercury space capsule. The crash of a 707 airplane at New York's Idlewild Airport kills 95 people, the nation's worst single-plane aviation disaster. Yves St Laurent makes a hit in Paris with his first show. 

Second quarter: Malcolm Scott Carpenter orbits the earth three times. President and Mrs. Kennedy pay a state visit to Mexico. The Supreme Court rules that the reading of prayers in the New York public schools is unconstitutional.   Krushchev, at a Benny Goodman Concert in N.Y., is pleased but puzzled.

Third Quarter: President Kennedy names Labor Secretary Arthur Goldberg to fill the post left vacant by Felix Frankfurter's retirement. A communications satellite, Telstar, is placed in orbit. Astronaut Schirra orbits the earth nearly 6 times in a Mercury capsule.

Fourth Quarter: After a 57 day strike, NFL members reach a contract settlement. A Labor Department report indicates a 6 percent increase in the cost of living. Congress approves the Kennedy administration's gasoline tax bill with a new Federal tax of 5 cents per gallon. John Steinbeck is awarded the Nobel prize for Literature.
